De Achterkajuit - The Aft Cabin
Welcome to our unique houseboat
A former East-German icebreaker, tug, pusher and fire boat built in 1954. We ourselves live in the front part, the ‘aft cabin’ – the former crew bunks – we converted into a cozy little studio with a vintage feel. The wooden interior gives a warm ambience, and the acoustics are great. A beautiful, clean place to work or to rest, to relax or to make music in.
The ‘aft cabin’ is an independent apartment with a lockable front door. Inside, you find a kitchenette with microwave, separate bathroom with shower and toilet, and of course a nice and spacey bed, comfortable seats and enough closet space. There is WiFi, a small TV and central heating that you can control yourself. All windows can be opened and are provided with plisse curtains and insect screens.
Besides the ‘aft cabin’ you also have the afterdeck to your disposal. Our ship is moored on the south, so if the sun shines and the weather is good, you can sit outside, summer or wintertime. On the afterdeck you find our mobile vegetable-, flower- and herb gardens, a great place to spend some time. You can lay down on the elevated wooden deck, with or without a beach umbrella, sit and read or work at the table, or just enjoy the water view. A BBQ and fireplace are available for the fiery people among us. If you prefer to keep it wet, or you are a mermaid, then swimming is also an option, but at your own risk. There is a ladder and a simple cool-water outdoor shower you can use.
How to get around
If you want to go downtown, the bus stop is 300 meters away and in 20 minutes you’re on Central Station. Shopping mall Brazilië, where you can buy anything, is a 10 minutes’ walk. On Wednesdays there’s a market on the west end of the island, and there are various restaurants and take aways in walking distance.
We’re very happy with our wonderful spot and love to share it with people, we’d like to make your stay as comfortable as possible. So, if you have any special wishes or questions, please let us know!
Good to know:
- The front door of the aft cabin is authentically small. You should crouch down a little on entering. The light is automatic, there’s a railing and a buffer, but mind your head.
- Smoking? Sure, outside please.
- 1 bed, 2 mattresses (80 x 200 cm)
- We have a dog that cannot enter the aft cabin, there’s also fences to block the side deck to prevent him from reaching the after deck
- Living on the water implies water sounds and movement. Sometimes you will hear the waves slosh and feel the ship move.
- You are a musician, and you can’t/won’t travel with your instrument, but you do want to play? Let us know, we’ll see what we can arrange.
